Understanding Filters When Building a Lead Search
Last updated: May 28, 2026
The goal of this article is to show which filters are available when building a list, and how they change depending on the type of search you're running.
How list type determines your filters
Not all lists are built the same way. There are three main list-building types:
Lead Database — pulls leads directly from Topo's proprietary database.
Signal-based — surfaces companies based on intent or activity signals, then enriches contacts from Topo's database.
LinkedIn — sources leads from LinkedIn data.
Each type gives you a different set of filters. Here's what to expect.
Topo Database search
People filters — narrow down individual leads using fields like name, job title, seniority, department, location, and more.
Company filters — target the right organizations using fields like industry, company size, revenue, headquarters location.
Signal filters — layer in intent signals available at both the company and contact level to prioritize leads showing relevant activity.
AI filters — add natural language criteria checked against publicly available data on the internet. Topo validates AI filters when you add them — if it can't find data for a given filter, it shows an explanation and a suggested alternative. You can still click "Use this filter anyway" to proceed.
Signal-based search
Because the starting point is a company-level signal, your filters work in two layers:
People filters — once target companies are identified, you can refine which contacts to pull using Topo's database filters (job title, seniority, department, etc.).
Company filters — the intent or signal data that triggered the match.
Signal filters — layer in intent signals available at both the company and contact level to prioritize leads showing relevant activity.
AI filters — available to further qualify contacts using natural language criteria.
Think of it as: the signal finds the companies, and the people filters find the right people inside them.
LinkedIn search
When you run a LinkedIn-based search, the available filters mirror the fields stored as LinkedIn data.
While the naming might not match Topo's database filters one-to-one, LinkedIn searches still give you enough precision to build well-targeted, high-quality lists.
Additional filter tools
Edit Filters with AI
The Edit Filters with AI button (top of the filter sidebar) lets you reprompt the agent to generate a new set of filters based on a revised description. Use it when the initial filters don't match your targeting intent.
Organisation Context filters
When Organisation targeting is active, the filters generated from your Organisation Context appear as normal filter entries in the sidebar — highlighted in green. You can edit or remove them like any other filter.
