How Lists and Sequences interact

Last updated: June 30, 2026

The goal of this article is to understand how Lists and Sequences interact with each other and how you can use them to your best advantage.

Understanding their relation

Lists can exist without being linked to a Sequence. You could build a list without reaching out to every contact in it.

Sequences need leads coming from one or more lists, otherwise you won't reach out to anyone.

A List can only be connected to an active Sequence. You cannot link a List to a Sequence with Setup, Finishing or Inactive status.

How they work together

Think of lists as who you're reaching out to and sequences as how you're reaching out. Because they're independent, you can:

  • Assign the same list to only one sequence. If a list is already linked to another sequence, you can still link it to a new one, but it will be disconnected from the initial sequence.

  • Feed multiple lists into a single sequence to scale outreach without duplicating setup.

  • Build lists now and activate them later when your sequence is ready.

Enrollment Policy

When you link a list to a sequence, you will be prompted to choose how contacts with existing sequence history should be handled. This setting is configured per list and only affects future automatic enrolments from that list.

If new contacts already have sequence history:

  • Enroll only if all previous sequences are completed — re-enrol the lead only if their last sequence finished more than X days ago (default: 90 days). Best for maintaining re-engagement gaps.

  • Skip enrollment — leads that have been in any sequence before will not be enrolled. Best for net-new-only outreach.

  • Enroll even if another sequence is still active — enrol regardless of existing sequences. Best when running parallel, complementary outreach.

  • Replace — stop the lead's current active sequence and enrol them in the new one. Best when pivoting messaging for the same audience.

For existing leads already in the list:

  • Only link future leads — existing leads are not enrolled immediately. Only new leads added to the list after linking will be enrolled.

  • Enroll existing leads now — all current leads in the list are enrolled immediately, subject to the policy chosen above.
