Can I reach out to contacts imported via CSV without enriching them first?

Context

When uploading a CSV of contacts that includes emails and LinkedIn URLs not sourced from Topo, you may wonder whether you need to enrich those contacts before being able to add them to a sequence and reach out to them.

Answer

Yes — you can import a CSV and enrol contacts in a sequence without enriching them first. Enrichment is now fully optional for CSV imports. Here is how it works:

  1. Import your CSV and map each column to the corresponding field (e.g. email, LinkedIn URL, first name). You only need to map the fields you actually have.

  2. Open your contact list — your imported contacts will appear, even those with minimal information.

  3. Select the contacts you want to reach out to and enrol them in a sequence.

When enrolling, you can choose what to do with any missing data:

  • Enrich optionally: You may choose to enrich email and/or phone number, but this is no longer required.

  • Enrol as-is: You can enrol contacts using only the information already in your CSV.

If a contact is missing a channel (e.g. no email address), you will be prompted to either:

  • Enrol anyway: Steps for the missing channel will not fire, but steps for available channels (e.g. LinkedIn) will still run.

  • Skip the contact: If a required channel is missing entirely, you can choose not to enrol that contact.

Important: If you choose not to enrich and some fields are missing (e.g. you have an email but no first name), you must set a fallback value for every variable that is blank in your CSV. Without a fallback, the contact will be skipped because Topo cannot send an incomplete or unpersonalised message.

Additional info worth noting

  • If an imported contact matches an existing contact in your workspace, they are automatically linked, so no information is lost.

  • This flexibility currently applies to CSV imports only. Contacts found via lead search still require enrichment before outreach.
