Lead Search 101

Last updated: September 8, 2026

Lead Search is how you find new people and companies in Topo. You describe who you are after, Topo queries its database, and you get everyone who matches.

It is criteria-based: you are asking who fits a description right now. If instead you want to catch people because of something that just happened, that is Signals.

Getting there

The quickest route is Search in the left sidebar. You can also start one from Lists, from the Accounts or Contacts pages, or by asking the AI agent from anywhere in Topo.

📄 All the ways you can build a lead search in Topo

Building your search

A search is a set of filters run against Topo's database. You can search for people or for companies.

There are two ways to get your filters in place, and you can mix them freely:

  • Ask the agent. Describe your targeting in plain language and the agent builds the filters for you.

  • Add them yourself. Pick filters from the sidebar and set them by hand.

Whichever way you start, every filter stays editable. The agent's filters are not locked — adjust or remove any of them.

Reading your results

You see every result that matches, straight away. There is no 25-lead preview to work through first — the full set is in front of you.

Topo also marks the rows you should know about before you spend anything, so you are not paying twice or contacting someone you should not:

  • People already enrolled in a sequence

  • People caught by one of your exclusions

  • People you have already imported

Finding your way around

  • Use the search bar to look for someone specific inside the results.

  • Click a lead's name to open their detail panel.

  • Click a company name to open the account's detail panel.

From an account panel

Opening a company from your results gives you two useful shortcuts:

  • Exclude the account — take it out of this search and keep it out of your outreach.

  • Search this account only — narrow the search down to people at that one company.

Acting on what you found

Select the leads you want, then:

  • Import into a list — put them in a list you can work with or link to a sequence later.

  • Import into a sequence — send them straight into outreach.

You do not have to take everything. Select as much or as little of the result set as you want.

Saving a search for later

You can save a search and come back to it, and rename it so it is easy to recognise. Saved searches are handy when you have spent time getting the filters right and want to reuse that work rather than rebuild it.

📄 How do I duplicate a Lead Search?

A lead search is a snapshot

A search shows what matched at the moment you ran it, and a list you build from one holds exactly what you imported. Neither grows on its own.

For a list that keeps filling itself as new people qualify, use a signal instead.
